Kerrowmoar from the Air

Just found a picture on the web which may be of interest to my American cousins. It shows the area of the Island where the Kelly family grew up . I have indicated the Kerrowmoar farm on the slopes of South Barrule. [ blue iindicator ] Just to the left of the house is the Kerrowkeil Chapel alongside the road [green indicator ].....where the family probably visited each Sunday. This minor road through Grenaby gave access to the farm ....via a small lane leading from it . This area has not changed much since the days the Kellys' all lived there . Most of the buildings you can see are small farms and cottages with just a few newer houses bordering the road .....which is the main road from the South of the Island to Peel and the North......the longest stretch of straight road on the Island. [Peel Hill...yellow indicator ] My mother always said the shape of South Barrule from this side of the Island reminded her of a whale. The patchwork quilt effect of the fields is typical of the whole of the lowland areas of the Island. The area along side the main road is known as Ballamodha...from the Manx Balley Moddey ...meaning the farm of dogs. There are many hundreds of places on the Island with the prefix Balla .... ....similar to the Irish Bally . The red indicator shows the field, in the corner of which, are the remains of the house where James Kelly's father and/or granfather lived...as mentioned earlier in these blogs, it was at this spot that my Uncle Wilfred , when he visited the Island, stood and looked out over the countryside he knew so well as a boy.
